The Florida Game and Wildlife Conservation Commission, UF/IFAS Extension, NRCS, Wild Turkey Federation, and the Jackson Soil & Water District will be hosting the Panhandle Pollinator Conservation Short Course on Thursday, June 21. The Short Course will be held at the Jackson County Extension Agriculture Conference Center, located at 2741 Pennsylvania Avenue, in Marianna. Registration begins at 8:30 AM Central, with the program starting at 9:00. A sponsored lunch will be provided. The program will conclude with a tour that is scheduled to start at 2:15 PM. The training and lunch are free, but pre-registration is required. RSVP with the Extension Office at 850-482-9620before close of business Monday, June 18.
Topics on the agenda include:
- Pollination biology, economics, and native bee case studies
- Pollination strategies used by various pollinators
- Native bee ecology, and nest sites
- Native plants for pollinator habitat, wildflower site preparation, planting, and establishment
- Bee-friendly land management, natural and semi-natural habitat, mitigating pesticide damage, protecting nesting sites, artificial nesting sites, and long-term habitat management
- Current Farm Bill provisions, USDA programs for pollinator conservation, plant selection, and seed sources
- Native pollinator planting tour at the UF/IFAS NFREC Beef Unit, north of Marianna.
